For those in search of crowds and world class, man-made attractions,
they won't find them in Surfside Beach, Texas. This is a quiet little
beach town devoid of high rises and crowds - a place where the world
slows down to "island time."
However, the best the world has to offer is a short one hour drive
away in Houston - the nation's fourth largest city. The cultural
amenities in Houston fulfill the most discriminating tastes. There's a
world class ballet, symphony, restaurants, amusement park, zoo, museums,
shopping (the Galleria) - you name it.
Remember the phrase, "Houston, we have a problem?" The Johnson Space
Center that received that transmission is nearby, and open
for tours. Not far from the Space Center is the newest tourist
destination - the Kemah Boardwalk with weekend bands, oodles of
restaurants, small boutiques, and boat watching.
Just a short distance away is Galveston Island where you will find
Moody Gardens, the Strand for shopping, and the new Schlitterbaun Water
Park. Sea Center Texas is located 15 miles away in Lake Jackson. The
Center houses an artificial reef, hatchery, aquarium and touching pool.
But people come to Surfside Beach, Texas for the main attraction -
the surf and beach. What could be more natural than the best attraction
in Surfside Beach, Texas being surfing? This area of the Texas coastline
provides the best surf rolls on the Texas Gulf Coast. (The reason why
one of the few business establishments in this beach town is a surf
shop.)
However, for those few fortunate people who have discovered Surfside
Beach, what matters most is the beach or relaxing on the deck or
walking on the beach in solitude and serenity as the sun sets.
